Welcome

The Missionary Baptist Seminary exists to train workers for the cause of Christ through His churches. While we seek to accomplish this goal, we promise to the student an atmosphere of christian love and fellowship. In return, we ask from the student: devotion to Christ, diligence in studies, and dedication to service.

We have absolute confidence in the Bible as the inspired Word of God. We believe it is able to make wise unto salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, and that it is able to thoroughly equip the child of God for every good work. The Missionary Baptist Seminary is a Bible school. The Bible is taught reverently to increase the student's skills in Christian ministry. We believe the student has not learned until he or she possesses a Christ-like spirit.

About Us

First and foremost, the Missionary Baptist Seminary is a preacher school. From the beginning, the seminary was a place where preachers could come and receive the necessary tools to enable them to fulfil their calling. While a seminary cannot make a man a preacher, a seminary can make a man who has been called by God a better preacher. If God has called you to preach, and you desire to serve the Lord as best you can, then the Missionary Baptist Seminary is for you.

Dr. John Edward Owen was born a preacher’s son in Duncan, Oklahoma in 1937 and was saved at age nine while his father pastored Fifth Street MBC. He finished his education in Texarkana, Texas while his father was pastor at Unity MBC. He served in the US Marine Corps Reserves during college at Texas Tech where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Brother Owen followed his father’s footsteps (L. H. Owen was part of the first year’s class in 1934 when the Seminary started) when he arrived at the Missionary Baptist Seminary in 1960. He met his future wife, Jean, at a youth rally in October 1960. They were married in 1961. Brother John was ordained by Unity MBC in Little Rock on August 3, 1962, their first child, Carla, was born on the next day, and he began his first pastorate on Sunday at Elgin MBC in Tuckerman, AR.

Having received his Master’s degree in 1967, Seminary President Paul Goodwin asked Brother Owen to teach some classes. In 1979 he was approached to serve as Administrative Vice-President. He completed his doctoral degree in 1972 and then became President of the Seminary on 1973 at age 35 where he served until December 1985. During this time, Bro. Owen led the project to pay off the land and construct a new campus (apartments, main building, dormitory) on its current location. He resigned from his teaching position in 2006, having made great contributions to the school and students over a long time of dedication service.

In the summer of 2023, Missionary Baptist Seminary faculty member and professor, Dr. Jerry Medlock, was privileged to take a Baptist history tour in the United Kingdom. Many of his experiences have been documented here for the use and benefit of the Missionary Baptist Seminary and those seeking to study Baptist history or simply curious as to the impact of Baptists in the world of the United Kingdom.

We really hope you enjoy this presentation of Dr. Jerry Medlock's experiences during his tour concerning Baptist history.

Section Title

Giving to the Missionary Baptist Seminary has been a part of the institutional structure since its founding in 1934. Churches and individuals have contributed greatly to the ongoing success of the school's mission by supporting general operating expenses, student pantry and aid, scholarship support, and building/land projects.

SemGive (Seminary Giving) continues this institutional structure of giving. This platform is intended to allow an easy and convenient way that anyone can use to send support to the Seminary and designate that support to any of our existing funds.
